DOGCARE

Responsibility and knowledge provide good animal HUSBANDRY

The dogs’ well-being should always be in focus, because the dogs have not always chosen to participate in all your dreams or in your business.
Think about it for a moment…
The dogs have never chosen to participate even if they love it, it is we who put the dogs in the situation they are in. Exclusively on our terms and omission from our judgment and actions.
For this reason, we have a large and 100% total responsibility for the dogs having a good time. Always

It is great to go on a tour with dogs. The tour is based on reciprocity – the dogs are dependent on us taking good care of them and you as a guest are completely dependent on them for you to make your way forward during the tour. This means that you will experience a unique affinity with the dogs in your team.

OUR BEST FRIENDS

OUR DOGS

In Arctic Dogsled Adventure we have three different breeds too. These are Siberian Husky, Alaskan Husky and Hounds. In total we have about 75 dogs. The number of dogs varies over the years depending on how many of puppies are born and how many pass out of time. We breed our puppies for our own business. But we must take in new blood to be able to continue breeding with our dogs, so that the bloodlines do not become too close to each other, ie to counteract inbreeding. That’s the only reason we buy dogs from other kennels from time to time. Our Hounds are mainly used for racing activities, but when they no longer compete, they join the shorter tours. In order for both us and the dogs to be safe in care, someone always lives with the dogs at the kennel.

THE DOG’S WORKING LIFE

The young dogs start to train when they are 10-12 months old depending on how they have developed. When they are about 18 months old, they start participating in the shorter tours. As they have matured physically and socially, they participate on the longer tours. When they are about 10 years old, they switch to taking shorter trips or retire completely. The retired dogs participate in the work of training puppies and young dogs. Pensioners stay at the kennel as long as they feel well and we feel that they have a dignified retirement life. Some dogs we relocate to private persons with good dog experience and with whom we have good contact. All dogs are insured for the best veterinary care. We put a lot of work into social training. Therefore, the dogs have on several occasions been able to help dog-scared visitors get over their dog fear. We have received many warm greetings from grateful guests.

OUR DOGS LIFE

THE DOG’S WORKING DAY

The dogs never go on two or more tours on the same day. Regardless of whether they have made a very short and quick trip in the morning, they do not go out again until the next day at the earliest. They also do not run every day during the winter, they have several rest days every month. This means that you as a guest are out with alert and fast dogs, and therefore the tours have very high quality. This means that our dogs are healthy and able to work well into old age and most of them become pensioners for age reasons and therefore can have several years as a healthy pensioner.

OFF-SEASON

The winter season ends at the end of April. After that, the dogs receive a de-escalation in the form of the puppies starting to be trained. The de-escalation will turn into a well-deserved holiday during the summer. Physical exercise during the summer is directly inappropriate, as the risk of overheating is big. The physical training for the upcoming winter season begins in early September. Then the dogs are trained with the help of a four-wheeler. We start with 3 km which is gradually increased. Before the winter season starts, we have reached about 25 km.

FOOD

In winter, the dogs need a lot of energy partly because of the cold and partly because of the work. We therefore feed them 2-3 times a day, mainly with meat but also a mixture with meat and dry food. In some cases, it is supplemented with pure salmon. During the bare ground period, the dogs get feed 2 times per day with dry food mixed with meat. Since they have free access to water, liquid is not added to the food. During the winter period, the dogs’ fluid needs are added to the food and immediately after a completed tour because during the winter it is not possible with free access to water, as it freezes into ice.
Both as amusement and to exercise their teeth, they have access to chewing material in their dog kennels.
